Google recently introduced a powerful new feature that allows Gmail to trigger automations in your AppSheet apps. This makes it much easier to connect AppSheet with other tools that send emails, all without writing any code. The feature was released in public beta in February 2025, and you should have access to it now.
How It Works
This feature is based on Gmail labels. When an incoming email matches certain criteria and a label is applied, it can trigger an automation in AppSheet. This opens up many possibilities for automatically updating your apps based on emails you receive.
In the video, I show an example of setting up an automation that creates new records in an AppSheet app whenever a specific type of email arrives. I demonstrate how to create a Gmail filter that automatically applies a label and how to configure AppSheet to detect that label and take action. The automation can extract useful details from the email, such as the sender’s address and message content, and add them to the app.
This approach can be used for many different scenarios, such as logging customer inquiries, tracking requests, or processing notifications from other systems. If you need to extract more specific details from an email, AppSheet also provides tools to parse the message content.
With Gmail triggers, you can automate data entry and streamline your workflows with minimal setup. If you’re using them, please let me know how in the comments!
