Using AppSheet to Create Smart, Conditional Columns
With AppSheet, you can create conditional columns that automatically adjust based on specific criteria. In this video, we’ll explore how you can use these features to enhance your applications.
Imagine needing to set an initial value for a column that stays the same unless you decide to update it. You can easily do this in AppSheet with simple expressions. For example, using the ‘now()’ expression sets the current date as the initial value, giving you a default that you can change later if necessary.
Sometimes, you want a column to update automatically without any manual input. That’s where virtual columns in AppSheet come in handy. They ensure that the value always reflects the latest data. By configuring expressions, you can let the app handle updates based on changing conditions.

Do you build with Google AppSheet (or do you want to)? If so, check out Boost for AppSheet. It’s a Chrome extension that helps you build whatever you can imagine. It’s free to sign up, and free for lite use.
Other times you might also want to set a column value only when certain conditions are met. For instance, in an order management app, you could change the payment status to ‘Ready to Invoice’ when the approval date shifts from blank to a specific date. AppSheet’s automation makes setting up these conditional updates straightforward, keeping your data accurate and timely.
